The Radical Growth of the App Economy [Infographic]

A recent study came out in which it was estimated that developing mobile applications accounted for nearly half a million new jobs on the market—a statistic I find absolutely staggering. It goes to show that seemingly small things can have an enormous impact on the economy.

This infographic lays out a few more statistics on the developing “app economy,” and also has some helpful tips on what apps can help readers with smartphones save money. My personal favorite is GasBuddy, which locates the where in your neighborhood gas prices are cheapest—something I’ve been finding more and more useful as gas prices climb. Check out the infographic in full below.

The World's Largest Slingshot

The world’s largest slingshot is made by Bros from DudePerfect cutting down a tree and making a giant slingshot out of it and is used to slam dunk a baseball successfully.

That would be just the perfect thing to play a real-life game of Angry Birds!

Microwave Case Mod

This is a very old, but very clever casemod where the modder turned his microwave into a computer. The LCD screen is of course built into the window and it looks great with that screensaver that shows a plate of food going round and round. All of the buttons on the microwave have been rewired to control the computer.

Accessories include a slot DVD drive in the top of the microwave, and the power supply, cable connectors and vents have been installed in the back.

Who Will Buy the iPad 3 [infographic]

The official introduction of the iPad 3 is bearing down upon us, with most rumors placing the Apple press event on March 7 (and a little rumor we heard placing it on March 6). It’ll probably have a higher-resolution 2048×1536 “retina” display, a 1GHz quad-core Apple A6 processor, 4G connectivity, and it might have a few other surprises, too.

This exclusive infographic is created by the experts at AYTM Research (Ask Your Target Market), with help from Mashable.

iPhone 4S vs. Samsung Galaxy S II Drop Test

So, do you want to see how the Galaxy S II compares to the iPhone 4S when dropped directly onto concrete? Yeah, we thought you might and you you may actually be surprised at the results. Each phone was put through three drop tests: One from waist height, one from shoulder height, and one from waist height but intentionally dropped on the screen, all of which can be seen on video below.

While the iPhone 4S was rendered basically unusable after a couple of drops, the Galaxy S II's Gorilla Glass kept it safe, secure, and intact.

Siri Assistant on iPhone 4S Gets Real World Demo

Stuff has posted an impressive real world demo of Siri, the voice-controlled personal assistant on the new iPhone 4S. Despite plenty of background noise, Siri works as intended, opening up websites, sending emails and text messages, checking the weather, setting up wake-up times for the alarm clock, and doing currency conversions all via simple voice commands. And these commands aren’t robotic ‘yes’ and ‘no’ or single word commands you might be used to with automated answering services, instead these are natural-sounding sentences.

Amusement Washing Machine by Lee Wei Chen

Lee Wei Chen is an MA student at Kingston University in south west London who has designed a video game that involves doing the laundry. His “amusement washing machine” resembles an arcade style video console but the bottom half of the unit is a washing machine. Lee Wei has linked the circuitry of the two devices, so that the washing cycle becomes dependent on the gamer’s progress. If he or she struggles while playing the game, extra coins will be needed to complete the cycle.

Lee Wei, who is originally from Taiwan, said he wanted to find a productive use for the “wasted but enjoyable time” he spent gaming. “I realised that the skills I had developed in the virtual world were useless in the real world. I wanted to make them useful,” the 27 year old explained. Players put three pound coins into the machine and are given three lives – this also turns the washing machine on. If players fail to progress beyond a certain level without losing their lives, the washing machine responds by refusing to move onto the next stage of its cycle and the player has to add more money.

Tablet Takeover: The State of the Tablet PC in the Enterprise [Infographic]

First introduced by Microsoft in 1999, many viewed the Tablet PC as a toy, a device that couldn’t get any real work done. With the release of Apple’s iPad in 2010, the mobile computing world has been consumed with tablets. A mobile device that is bigger than a smartphone, but smaller than a laptop, Tablet PCs are quickly becoming the device of choice for professionals who need the power of a computer, with the portability of a smartphone. Today’s #E2sday looks at the state of the Tablet takeover in the enterprise.

World's Smallest Space Invaders Arcade Game

For those of you who grew up in the 1980s and frequented arcades that had all these large machines, asking you to feed them quarter after quarter while you master the nuances of the game itself, this is one DIY project that quite unlike the electric chair, is able to send chills down your spine. After all, we are talking about what could possibly be the smallest Space Invaders arcade cabinet in the world – and a fully functioning one at that.

Measuring a mere 7″ x 3.5″ x 4.5″, this arcade cabinet comes complete with super small buttons and a tiny arcade stick – definitely not something you would want to vent your frustrations on when you lose. At the heart of this cabinet lies parts from a Game Boy Advanced SP, so Space Invaders isn’t the only game since it can handle just about any GBA SP cartridge. Check out a video of it in action after the jump.
